Hanoi French Quarter Walking Tours
Tour Itinerary
Your guide will be waiting at the Statue of the Fallen Heroes, situated directly opposite The Huc Red Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple. Please look for a clearly visible name tag with the red Free Walking Tours logo.
1️⃣ Statue of the Fallen Heroes
The tour begins at this modest yet meaningful monument beside Hoan Kiem Lake. Dedicated to young Vietnamese who lost their lives during the First Indochina War, the statue reflects Hanoi’s spirit of resilience and remembrance. Today, it stands as a quiet meeting point in the very center of the city.
2️⃣ Ngoc Son Temple & The Huc Bridge
Continue to Ngoc Son Temple and cross the famous red Huc Bridge. Here, your guide will share stories and legends connected to Hoan Kiem Lake, explain local spiritual practices, and point out daily rituals around the lakeside. Early morning or late afternoon light makes this stop especially photogenic.
3️⃣ Ly Thai To Statue – Founder of Hanoi
Stop at the statue honoring Emperor Ly Thai To, who chose Hanoi as Vietnam’s capital in 1010. As the founder of the Ly Dynasty, his decision shaped the city’s future. The square surrounding the statue is a popular gathering place and a strong symbol of Hanoi’s cultural identity.
4️⃣ Government Guest House (Tonkin Palace)
Once known as Phủ Khâm Sứ, this site served as the headquarters of the French colonial administration in northern Vietnam. From here, political and economic affairs of Tonkin were managed. Although the complex has changed over time, the location remains a reminder of Hanoi’s colonial-era governance.
5️⃣ Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Built in 1901, this historic luxury hotel represents some of the finest French colonial architecture in the city. Over the decades, it has hosted writers, diplomats, and world leaders. Its elegant design, layered history, and wartime bomb shelter tours make it one of Hanoi’s most iconic landmarks.
6️⃣ Hanoi Opera House
Constructed between 1901 and 1911, the Hanoi Opera House is a standout example of French neoclassical design. With its grand columns, balconies, and domed roof, it continues to serve as a major venue for concerts, ballets, and cultural performances.
7️⃣ St. Joseph’s Cathedral
The walk concludes at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi’s oldest Catholic church, built in 1886. Featuring neo-Gothic architecture, twin bell towers, and stained-glass windows, the cathedral remains an active place of worship and one of the Old Quarter’s most recognizable landmarks.
